A Moving Poem
When I was doing a bit of research for a 9/11 tribute, I came across the following poem at Villainous Company.

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.
As we carried each other down the stairs of the burning building,
We became one class.
As we lit candles of waiting and hoping,
We became one generation.
As the firefighters and police officers fought their way into the inferno,
We became one gender.
As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.
As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.
As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,
We became one body.
As we mourned together the great loss,
We became one family.
As we cried tears of grief and loss,
We became one soul.
As we retell with pride the sacrifice of heroes,
We become one people.

Anonymous. Quoted in a sermon by Dr. Larry Ethane, "From Remembrance to Hope"

I was taken aback by that poem and the more I reread it I wished that the nationalism shown during and after the 9/11 tragedy was not as evident in the current tragedy in New Orleans.
It is really sad to read about all the racism that prevails in the press over the New Orleans fiasco. Pictures of black men looting and white men borrowing is just one example. Put yourself in their place - your family has been trapped on the roof of your house for days which is now an island and you venture out for food and water. That's not stealing, that's trying to keep your loved ones alive!

Local readers of Blog MyyyyyAsssss can help in the Katrina Relief effort. Yes, Manitoulin is a long way off from New orleans, but think of it - Manitoulin is an island surrounded by a great body of water. It is not unimagineable that a similar tragedy could happen here.

What can you do?

From our local newsletter:
Katrina Relief Effort:

On October 1st a Manitoulin Transport truck donated by Doug Smith will be travelling to Jackson, Mississippi with a load of materials for the hurricane victims. Anyone wishing to donate non-perishable materials such as canned goods, baby foods, flashlight batteries, hygiene products, soap etc., may drop their donations at the Gateway Grill before October 1st. Any money donated, will be spent locally to purchase additional goods. Please do not donate clothing because it is not such a problem in the warm climate.
