Crunch Time

If you have been reading this blog you will know that you will soon have MSIE7 installed automatically if you have Automatic Updates selected in your security settings.

A previous post told you how to delay this from happening, but if you decide to go ahead the following will be of interest to you.

HelpWithWindows.Com provides the following security settings to "Harden Your System".

  • .NET Framework

    • XAML browser applications: Disable
    • XPS documents: Disable
  • ActiveX controls and plug-ins

    • Active scripting: Disable *)
    • Allow Programmatic clipboard access: Disable

Please note the asterick above. Disabling Active Scripting disables javascript. This will severely limit your internet experience as your webmaster, for one, strongly relies on javascript to display a lot of content on your browser. You would be missing out on a lot.
If you are the type who prefers a text-only type of web experience then go for it.

When you sit down and have a closer look at the above recommendations you will note that your web experience will be strongly influenced. For example, I often use Iframes in my web pages.

Brian Livingston of Windows Secrets suggets you take it a step further by using Firefox instead of IE. He points out that you have the capability with Firefox to switch to an IE window when you have to by employing the IE View Extension.
