Update On Caledonia Arrests

I reported yesterday that the OPP had made arrests at the latest Caledonia demonstration and that the folks arrested would be transported to the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre. It has been reported that Cayuga's OPP station instead was used to house Gary McHale overnight and when he was hooked up for an electronic bail hearing the justice of the peace stated Mr. McHale was not subject to bail and was released.
So you figure this one out - McHale was handcuffed, removed to a police lockup and then let go the next morning. Was this a legal arrest? Did someone authorize The War Measures Act when we were not looking?
McHale was reunited with his wife and by this time I would imagine he is seated at his computer desk knee deep in text about his 'life behind bars'. His web page will be interesting to read in the days to follow.
The Canadian Free Press covered the story with this story and a related story.

Gary McHale has come away from this weekend's demonstration with exactly what he wanted. He got national press coverage on a local problem which is really part of a national problem.
The OPP and the jeering natives in the Caledonia blockade have been identified for what they are. You ask what they are?

  • The OPP has demonstrated that they are the fall guys here. In as much as each officer was probably bursting to grab a flag and march with McHale in a show of solidarity and national pride, they were forced to follow orders and police the white man only.
  • The natives continue to strut around Caledonia like they are God's chosen people wheninfact they are rebels that in days gone by would have been arrested for treason. This is clearly demonstrated in the following quote:

Six Nations spokesman Hazel Hill wondered why McHale was in Caledonia, because nobody wants him there.
But she said the issues go beyond Caledonia.
"Canada has imposed itself within our lands," she said. "Canada doesn't exist without native people. Canada is not a nation. It doesn't have any claim to any land, because everything it has ever done is based on stolen lands."
