As stated on the preceeding page, I just got through a teaching/learning experience by giving a course on computer basics to a group of students here on Manitoulin through Cambrian College.
I have to admit that it was my first time at the front of a classroom other than years and years ago when Christian Brothers called me up to the front of the class for a demonstration of corporal punishment. It was rather refreshing not having to bend over and have a goaltenders hockey stick applied to my bottomside.

So, .......to continue on...

The Netscape Browser:

Some of you may be running the Netscape browser and should know there is a new version out that corrects some security flaws and injects something new to its looks. The update is not available off your current browsers Help button and you have to download it here. Your current version has to be uninstalled before you install this one, but all your settings are left untouched as they are kept in a seperate folder.

What’s New in Netscape Navigator 9 tells you about the new features.

Online Books:

I just came across a page that might be of interest to you if you are one of those rare types that still reads books. This site allows you to read an amazingly large number of books from various categories online.

Other such sites from my favourites are: Enjoy!

All I Want For Christmas:

Tis the season that most of you will be out buying presents, but before you actually dig into your pockets for a new 'puter with a Vista operating system I suggest you read an article by a Microsoft MVP - that's an expert on Microsoft Windows if you didn't know and this title is given out ONLY by Microsoft.

The title is Microsoft Itself Will Kill Vista.

The guy that wrote that article is both a MVP and an IT guy for a large company - he should know of what he speaks!

Like I've Been Saying

Stick With XP

Click For Bigger Pic I received a Christmas mailing from Claude and he has Lenovo desktop and notepad computers on sale for the month of December.

It's interesting that his offerings are Windows XP - possible my harping about Vista did some good. You should know that some of the major computer anufacturers, and Lenovo is right up there, are making XP available for those of us who know better than going with Vista.

Claude is out on the road repairing computers quite often so you might want to call first to arrange a time if you want to go in and grab one of these babies. Tell him POKO sent ya - he doesn't know I plugged his business here.

Download Manager:

You ask, "Do I really need a download manager?"

Consider this. You need to download a file that is 25 megs - a considerable file to download even on highspeed and something you would start just before you went to bed if you were on dialup. So you go to bed and wake up the next day to find the download crapped out. Time lost - you can't get any of that downloaded file back.

If you had a download manager, you could restart that download and it would continue from the point it left off. Need I say more?

There are countless download managers out there that you can use, but the one I'm recommending is FreeDownloadManager and here's a screenshot.

So how do I set it all up?
  • In Windows Explorer create three new folders. " download " " shared " " temp "
You'll want to put all your downloads in "download". If you have to process the download as in a zipped file, put the zipped file in "temp". Once you have installed the file cut 'n paste the original file from "download" into "shared". Delete the file in "temp".
You now have an archive of all files you download which from time to time you burn to a cd. Put the cd somewhere safe and you are set to go if you ever need that file again.

  • Download and install FreeDownloadManager from the link above.

  • Now you have to set up the preferences to direct your downloads to the folder you wish to put your downloads in. You will also want to tick "load on startup" "start minimized" "minimize to tray" "close button minimizes to tray" in General Settings. In Download Options you will want to tick "perform virus check" and direct the check to your virus app.

Now you can reboot your 'puter and your download manager starts up and resides in your systray. When you click on a file to download it, your download manager goes into action.
An added bonus is that this application divides your download into different sections making the actual download time considerably faster. And by opening the FreeDownloadManager control panel you can observe the download or simply minimize it and let it do its thing while you do something else.

This is getting too long, eh.

" in my dreams "

I would've had this company do a web page, but Marie wasn't too keen on it. Go ahead and call me henpecked. You weren't the guy who had to sleep with her.

We could have wiped out the Nazis in eight weeks if only we had this guy in our IT department.

I asked him but he had the idea that I was connected to a porn site.

Tony Curtis was hot, but I would never had sung to the President if this guy was born twenty years earlier. I bet I'd still be alive too!
Yes, it's true
I sleep very soundly and when I do I am prone to talking with dead people and sponges. Don't let that scare you away - you can depend on a well-designed website and it is guaranteed not to be spooky.

I'm just a cartoon character from Day by Day but I know a whiner winner when I see one. Visit us on our web page.

And Please...
If it's past your bedtime and you can't sleep, please think of your good friends around the world who just may or may not be in bed.

Being Indispensable

Sometime, when you are feeling important,
Sometime, when your ego's in full bloom,
Sometime, when you take it for granted,
You're the only qualified one in the room...
Sometime, when you feel that your going,
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these few simple instructions
And see how it humbles your soul.
Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up tio your wrist,
Pull it out, and the hole that is remaining,
Is the measure of how you'll be missed!
You may splash all you please when you enter,
You can stir up the water galore ~
But stop and you'll find in a minute, That it looks quite the same as before.
The moral of this quaint observation,
Is to do the very best that you can,
Be proud of yourself, but remember,
There is only one indispensable man.
